IntroductionMy name is Summer Rice and I am a senior at Whittier High School. A graduaton requirement is to complete and pass the Senior Project. The senior project is a career project where we research and do fieldwork based on the career that interests us most so that we can deside whether it is the right career path we want to proceed. I researched and completed fieldwork for a First Grade Teaher. I really enjoy volunteering and helping young students. My goal in becoming a first grade teacher is to influence students' lives and teach them deciplne and routine while having fun. Also to help them create good habits and morals to become great leaders when they grow up.

Becoming an Elementary School Teacher
When you were younger have you ever looked up to someone in awe and amazement, kind of like a superhero? Inspired and touched by that person, wanting to be just like them someday. Johnny was six years old when he started his First day of First Grade. He was excited, nervouand anxious all at the same time waiting inline outside the classroom. His first glimpse at the teacher and he felt as if he was floating because he had so many butterflies in his stomach Johnny loved to learn and soaked up all the knowledge he could and always asked many questions. He constantly was engaged in class and loved to participate. Gaining new knowledge everyday like a sponge and always running home to share with his parent, Johnny shared with kids at the park. Johnny loved his First Grade teacher so much that he decided that one day he wanted to become a First Grade teacher just like his. When Johnny was old enough to write a full report about what career he would like, he looked down at his paper and started to brainstorm. He thought back to his First Grade teacher and remembered how inspirational and dedicated she was, and then realized he wanted to influence someone’s life as she influenced his. Picture them running all over the place jumping and screaming, grabbing everything in their reach, pretending that cooties exist. First Graders imagination is limitless and they are so creative. They sometimes get mad for the smallest things, and some of them even cry. They are easily excited when called on and laugh at everything. Not being afraid to speak out and volunteer, which is the best. I love kids and I want to help them learn and create good habits and morals. This is what inspired me to become a First Grade teacher. I cannot wait to see their little faces ready to start there long journey of education. All six year olds have different little personalities and are very open-minded. Getting to decorate the classroom must be a blast! There are so many things to choose from and so many books and toys everywhere. I would be a great First Grade teacher because I am very patient, loving, empathetic, and great generally with kids. I am also very friendly and fun to work with. Becoming a First Grade teacher is a viable career choice because teachers are always needed, and Education has no limits. If I can touch one child and improve their experience makes it all worthwhile.
Skills needed to become a First Grade teacher are patience and understanding to help students learn. Teachers must have amazing communication skills to interact with not only the students, but also the parents. Creativity is instrumental in developing lessons and activities that are both Educational and fun. Knowing different languages can help teachers, students, and their parents communicate on a personal level. Being bilingual looks good on a resume when in an interview for this particular job because not only can you communicate well, it also shows that you are dedicated to helping the student learn and be the best they can be. Aptitude includes the ability to work with children, creating an effective and pleasant classroom, and also a fun but developmental environment. Organization, resolving conflicts, and communication are abilities required. Teachers need to motivate, help develop and influence the students to be creative while being understanding, patient, and instructive.
Elementary school teachers concentrate on the basic skills their students stepping stone they will need throughout their school years: reading, writing, arithmetic, and simple concepts in science. "Some work with the same group of students for the entire school day; others take a team approach, specializing in one subject, such as science or arithmetic, which they teach to several groups of students"(Elementary pg. 1). Seeing children develop new skills and learn limitless information can be rewarding. At the same time, however, teaching also may be very stressful. Some schools have large classes and lack important teaching tools, which include computers and text books that are up-to-date.
Most teachers are held accountable for their students’ performances on standardized tests, which can be frustrating and sometimes unfair. It is unfair because some student tense up or get nervous they freeze on tests and do not do so well, and that makes it look like the teacher is not doing such a great job.
I plan to graduate high school in June, and attend either Michigan State or Alabama University in the fall where I will peruse my master’s degree in Elementary Education and minor in Criminal Justice and Political Science. For grad school, I plan to attend the University of California Berkeley. I want to teach at my old Elementary school where I fell in love with my first Grade teacher, New Temple Elementary in South El Monte. Working with children is something I love and really enjoy. Getting the chance to influence a child’s life is such an amazing experience and a wonderful feeling. It is something I am really looking forward to and a goal I hope to achieve. The benefits are great and I will be doing something I love every day.
